Born on July 11, 1958, in Emekuku, Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, Prof. Obinna’s early life was steeped in a rich cultural and educational environment. His academic journey began at Immaculate Conception Primary School (now Ezelukwu Primary School) in Emekuku, where he earned his First School Leaving Certificate with distinction in 1971. This early achievement foreshadowed a lifetime of academic excellence. He continued his education at Emekuku High School (formerly Sebastian Academy College), where he excelled in his studies and obtained his West African School Certificate (WASC) with Grade One Distinction in 1976.

Prof. Obinna’s passion for languages led him to pursue higher education in French, a decision that would shape his future academic career. He embarked on his tertiary education journey at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Languages, earning a Second-Class Upper Division in June 1981. His academic prowess earned him a French Government Scholarship, which provided him the opportunity to further his studies in France. At the University of Lyon, he completed both his master’s degree in literature in French and Civilization and his PhD in Literature in French and Civilization by 1986, solidifying his expertise in the field.

This commitment has driven his teaching career, which began in 1976 at Government College, Owerri, and has since spanned several decades and institutions, including the Nigerian Army School of Education, Rivers State College of Education, Abia State University, and Imo State University, where he has been a professor since 2006.

He has held numerous leadership roles, including Head of the French Unit at Imo State University, Director of Research and Linkages, and Director of Quality Assurance.
